Cyber Essentials Certification

In a world of complex cyberattacks, and a customer base that is more clued up than ever about the use of their data, the need for thorough protection against sophisticated cyber threats is vital.

We can help you achieve CE or CE+ accreditation

If you can show that you’re a business that takes attacks on processes, data and servers, seriously, you can very well gain a competitive edge against more lax competitors. As well as taking our own security infrastructure seriously, here at Everything Tech, we’re passionate about making sure each and every business we work with is capable of dealing with cyber threats.

This reason, among many others, is why we can help you through the process of attaining your ‘Cyber Essentials’ or ‘Cyber Essentials Plus’ certifications. By attaining these for your business, you can show that you have worked hard to get your security controls in place and can give your clients peace of mind that they are working with a business that has achieved high levels of certification.

Why Your Business Needs A Cyber Essentials Certification

What Is ‘Cyber Essentials’?

Cyber attacks are everywhere, from simple phishing scams, which target people’s email addresses and bank details, to sophisticated attacks that look to cripple businesses and steal their data. No matter the level of threat, their effects are real, big or small.

These threats are why the Cyber Essentials scheme was set up in 2014, by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, to encourage organisations and bodies to adopt basic security controls that help them ward off online threats.

This is a government-backed scheme and was created with help from the Information Security ForumInformation Assurance for Small and Medium Enterprises Consortium and the British Standards Institution. This combination has made the scheme extremely popular and well-respected. In other words, if you have this accreditation, clients and customers will instinctively take you more seriously. From the 1st October 2014, the Government made it a requirement for all suppliers to be certified against this scheme if they were bidding for Government contracts that involved handling data and/or personal information

The scheme is made up of two certification processes, the regular Cyber Essentials (CE) certificate, and the more advanced Cyber Essentials Plus accreditation (CE+), both of which cover five main technical controls. What follows are those key controls:

  1. Patch management.
  2. Access control.
  3. Secure configuration.
  4. Boundary firewalls and internet gateways.
  5. Malware protection.

The first option, the Cyber Essentials certification, is a self-assessment option that will give your infrastructure protection from a wide range of potential attacks. This option shows you and your team how to implement proper security measures to prevent common threats. By achieving this Cyber Essentials self-assessment, you should have peace of mind because you’ll know that you have the tools and knowledge available to implement a high cybersecurity standard.

Another added benefit is that, by having this badge of completion visible on your site, you will naturally ward off any potential attackers, because they are looking for companies that don’t have this certificate.

Cyber Essentials Plus is slightly different, in that it involves an onsite audit and the testing of relevant security controls. Here at Everything Tech, we recommend businesses incur the added costs of CE+ because it shows that your cybersecurity controls have been independently tested, rather than being done via a self-assessment questionnaire.

How Much Does ‘Cyber Essentials’ Cost?

‘Cyber Essentials’ costs around £300 + VAT and the ‘Cyber Essentials Plus’ is around £1,900 + VAT.

How Everything Tech Can Help You With Your Cyber Essentials Certification

Here at Everything Tech, we’re extremely well versed in this scheme and, as an IT support company in Manchester, we can help you put in place the right controls, processes and infrastructure so that you pass the programme. By choosing us, you save time, money, and ensure that you’ll pass first time around, and won’t have to incur further costs.

For businesses big and small, their IT infrastructure can be complicated, and something they aren’t that well versed on. Therefore, when it comes time to achieve this certification, they may not fully know what controls they need to have in place, which often results in them failing. However, by working with a proper consulting firm like Everything Tech, you can rest assured knowing that we do know what to look for, and what systems to put in place to achieve a pass. We’ll get under the hood of your IT systems and make any necessary tweaks, changes or updates so, not only can you pass, but, you can materially benefit from the work that we do.

Benefits Of The Cyber Essentials Scheme

You Can Prove You Have Technical Security Controls In Place

In particular with the CE+ certificate, you can show stakeholders, customers and investors that you have the actual, physical controls in place, as well as a good overall business ethos, to prevent cybersecurity attacks.

Give Your Customers Assurance

Customers will be far more willing to hand over sensitive data, or personal information, if they know they are working with a business that has achieved this accreditation.

Validation For A Whole Year

Once done, you don’t have to worry about it again for another year. You can carry on growing your business, knowing you have the correct certificate in place, for a whole 12 months.

Gain A Competitive Advantage

Think about who you’re more likely to want to do business with, a company that has this Government approved scheme, or one that hasn’t? Working to achieve this will put you at an advantage against other businesses who have not invested the money in it.
